Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors the man and woman who died while serving in the U.S military. It is observed on the last Monday of May. Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day, and it was first observed on May 30, 1868. The holiday was created to honor the soldiers who fought during the Civil War. In 1971, Memorial Day became a federal holiday. 

On Memorial Day, people visit cemeteries and memorials to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Many people also attend parades and have sales or flags for Memorial Day. held in honor of the holiday. Memorial Day is also the unofficial start of summer, and many people use the holiday as an opportunity to travel and spend time with family and friends, like some people visit the graves of the people that served for them, or they visited the place that they spent the most time with. 

While Memorial Day is a time of celebration and remembrance, it is also a time to reflect on the sacrifices that have been made by the men and women who have served in the U.S. military. The holiday is a reminder that freedom is not free, and that the men and women who have served in the military have made tremendous sacrifices to protect our country and our way of life.
