I’m sure at one point in your life someone has told you, “Make sure to stay hydrated!” and although this phrase may sound unrelenting, staying hydrated is actually essential. Your cells, tissues, and organs depend on the water you drink in order to function properly. It is best to stay hydrated to eliminate any risks of health issues, even if minor.

Simply drinking water can prevent a series of health issues, such as headaches (see Jenna Mizanin’s article on headaches for more information), urinary tract infections, dizziness, kidney stones and poorer health in general. Even so, every person is different, and the amount of water you need to drink depends on what kind of activities you participate in and your health in general. These activities may include exercise, which can make you sweat, therefore dehydrated, but it is not limited to this. You may simply have been outside on a hot and humid day and may cause your body to require more fluids. Additionally, intake of liquids that are caffeinated does not contribute to staying hydrated. Believe it or not, caffeine actually dehydrates you, so if you ever have any kind of caffeine drink namely soda, green or black tea, coffee, or energy drinks, be sure to hydrate not too long after to prevent any kind of dehydration effects. According to , “For most people, water is the best thing to drink to stay hydrated. Sources of water also include foods, such fruits and vegetables which contain a high percentage of water.” This means that besides water, you can maintain your hydration from various fruits and vegetables.

Based on personal experience, there was one day last year on a vacation where I had forgotten to drink water for the majority of the day. As a result, the next day while my family and I were visiting a park, my vision went black, my hearing became all muffled, and I had gotten dizzy, also causing a headache. This had been a direct result of dehydration, as later after drinking some water, I had noticed that my face was exceptionally pale. From this experience I learned that staying hydrated is crucial and should never be overlooked.

Overall, I personally would advise keeping hydrated. It should be a given to always keep track of how much water you drink to make sure it’s not too little. Maintaining your health is always good, and drinking water is just one way to make sure you stay healthy.
